NetSuite vs Business Central: what should you compare?
NetSuite and Business Central can both handle finance and business operations, but the required editions, modules and integrations differ. Compare how each would handle your company structure and the work your staff do each day.
Business Central editions and licence types
Business Central is offered in Essentials and Premium plans, with a limited-access Team Members option. Premium adds manufacturing and enhanced service-management capabilities to Essentials.
Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management are separate products with their own licensing. If those names appear in your quote, use our NetSuite vs Dynamics 365 Finance comparison instead.
NetSuite's annual licence combines the core platform, optional modules and users. Check the proposed modules rather than assuming every advertised capability is in the base subscription.
Is Microsoft making businesses move to the cloud?
Microsoft encourages Dynamics GP customers to move to Business Central. For GP under its Modern Lifecycle policy, product enhancements, regulatory updates and technical support end on 31 December 2029, with security patches, if needed, available until 30 April 2031; older GP versions have their own dates.
NAV has version-specific dates too. Dynamics NAV 2018 extended support ends on 11 January 2028, not on the GP deadline.
Business Central remains available online and on-premises, with some differences in functionality between the two deployments.
If a supplier says you must migrate, ask which support policy applies to your product and version. The proposal should distinguish the replacement software from the partner’s work on data, configuration and training.
NetSuite and Business Central: capabilities to compare
| Question | NetSuite | Business Central |
|---|---|---|
| Group reporting | OneWorld is an add-on for multi-subsidiary business management and consolidation. | Supports consolidation across companies with different charts of accounts, fiscal years and currencies. |
| Operations | Oracle lists inventory, order management, procurement, supply chain and warehouse capabilities. Confirm which modules are included. | Essentials covers finance, sales and operations; Premium adds manufacturing and enhanced service management. |
| India localisation | Oracle documents GST, TDS, TCS, e-invoicing and e-way bill functionality with prerequisites. | Microsoft publishes India-localisation documentation, including tax and audit-trail functions. Test your applicable scenarios. |
| Deployment | Cloud software with subscription licensing. | Online and on-premises options, with feature differences. |
| Buying and support | Quote the platform, modules, users, implementation and support separately. | Microsoft sells and implements through partners; technical support starts with the reselling partner. |
Both systems support group reporting. Ask each supplier to demonstrate your intercompany transactions and month-end consolidation so you can compare the work involved and any additional applications required.
Licence prices and implementation costs
Microsoft publishes Indian plan prices per user per month, paid yearly, with GST extra as applicable and pricing caveats. The licence plan determines access to the software; implementation and migration need to be priced separately.
Oracle describes an annual NetSuite licence plus an initial implementation fee. OneWorld and other optional modules must be included where required.
- Give both suppliers the same list of people and what each person must do.
- Separate full users from limited-access roles, but verify the actual permissions.
- Include localisation, add-ons, integration maintenance, historical data and training.
- Ask for renewal terms, discount expiry, support hours and change-request rates.
- Cost a realistic growth scenario rather than only the first month.
Use the cost categories in our ERP buying guide to make the proposals comparable. Include any work or recurring charges excluded from the headline quote.
Demonstrations to request from both suppliers
- The group close. Consolidate your real entity structure, show an intercompany transaction and explain the reconciliation.
- The operational exception. Process a partial delivery, return or production issue and show its effect on stock and finance.
- The Indian invoice. Run your applicable tax and e-invoicing workflow, including a correction, with every add-on identified.
If Microsoft 365 is important to your team, demonstrate the proposed email, spreadsheet and reporting workflows too. Check whether those connections remove manual work and what they cost to maintain.
