NetSuite vs SAP S/4HANA Cloud: compare the right editions
An SAP renewal or migration proposal may leave you choosing between upgrading the existing system and replacing it. The comparison depends on which SAP edition is being proposed and how much of your current setup you need to retain.
Which SAP edition is in your proposal?
SAP distinguishes S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, Private Edition and its on-premises S/4HANA offering. Public Edition uses standardised processes and a new implementation; Private Edition has scope comparable to S/4HANA and supports additional transition paths.
If your proposal says SAP Cloud ERP, ask the supplier to identify the edition, included applications and implementation route in writing. Do not treat an ECC conversion, a Public Edition implementation and a move to NetSuite as the same project.
Is SAP forcing customers to move to the cloud?
Mainstream maintenance for eligible SAP Business Suite 7 core applications runs to the end of 2027, with optional extended maintenance through 2030. This policy covers the latest three enhancement packages of the listed core applications.
The extended-maintenance premium is two percentage points on the maintenance basis. That is not a published cloud-migration fee and does not mean a 2% increase in every customer's total IT bill.
SAP also offers on-premises S/4HANA with a perpetual licence. A move to cloud subscriptions is therefore not the only route available across its product range.
SAP also describes a conditional Transition Option for 2031 to 2033, aimed at its largest and most complex customers. It requires a move to SAP ERP, private edition on SAP HANA before the end of 2030, has further eligibility conditions and excludes Java-dependent capabilities.
For affected third-party-database and Java environments, SAP warns of additional support and conversion-tooling limits after 2030. Have your SAP partner check your specific landscape rather than assuming extra time is available.
NetSuite, SAP Public Edition and SAP Private Edition
| Question | NetSuite | SAP S/4HANA Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| What are we buying? | Cloud ERP, with an annual licence comprising the core platform, optional modules and users. | Public and Private Editions use subscriptions, but their scope and operational responsibilities differ. |
| How do we get there? | Treat a switch from SAP as a new implementation. Ask Invitra to assess processes, exports, data quality and integrations. | Public Edition: new implementation. Private Edition: options include system conversion, new implementation and selective data transition. |
| What about group finance? | OneWorld supports multiple subsidiaries and consolidation; include the add-on in the scope. | Check the exact group-finance scope in the proposed edition and demonstrate your consolidation process. |
| Who manages changes? | Agree testing, integration ownership and customisation support in the implementation contract. | Public Edition is more standardised; Private Edition offers broader scope and upgrade flexibility. |
| What does it cost? | Include the subscription, required modules, implementation and ongoing support in the quote. | Request the edition, entitlements, migration scope, retained systems and ongoing services in the same cost model. |
When to consider NetSuite as an SAP replacement
Test NetSuite when your ERP has become harder to maintain than the work it supports, or when separate finance, stock and purchasing systems are slowing reporting. Check the requirements before comparing prices.
- Ask the finance team to demonstrate a month-end close and group report using your entity structure.
- Ask operations to test production, warehouse and order exceptions, not just the standard sales flow.
- List every SAP customisation and decide whether it is still required before rebuilding it elsewhere.
- Keep SAP in contention if specialist processes or a supported conversion route make it the better fit.
Use the ERP buying checklist to score each demonstration. For Indian tax requirements, Oracle documents a separate localisation SuiteApp and its setup prerequisites; inclusion and configuration should be explicit in the quote.
Is switching to NetSuite cheaper than an SAP cloud move?
The cost difference depends on the migration work as well as the subscriptions. Compare both proposals over five years using the same users, entities and service levels, including any period when you need to run both systems.
- Separate SAP maintenance, subscriptions, infrastructure and application-management services.
- Include NetSuite modules, OneWorld where needed, localisation, connectors and implementation.
- Price data cleanup, history retention, testing, training and internal staff cover on both sides.
- Ask what happens to discounts at renewal and what changes trigger extra charges.
A lower annual subscription may not offset the cost of rebuilding integrations and customisations. Include that work before deciding which proposal is cheaper.
Review your SAP proposal with a NetSuite team in Pune
Bring the current product and version, renewal date, entity list and proposed migration scope. Invitra can assess the licences, configuration and migration work a NetSuite implementation would require.
Our Pune team also handles training, support and Indian tax and bank-integration requirements. A requirements discussion can take place by video or in person, with any workshop fees and travel agreed beforehand. Meet the team or request a consultation.
We can help you assess the NetSuite option alongside that proposal. Read how Invitra delivers NetSuite projects and what to prepare for an ERP move.
Questions before you decide
Does every SAP customer lose mainstream maintenance in 2027?
No. The published Business Suite 7 policy has a defined application and enhancement-package scope. It is not a deadline for every SAP product.
Is SAP Private Edition the same as Public Edition?
No. SAP documents different functional scope, implementation paths and operational responsibilities.
Can we keep our existing SAP customisations in NetSuite?
Do not assume so. Each requirement needs assessment, and any necessary replacement or integration must be scoped and tested.
Will Invitra guarantee a cheaper migration?
No. The result depends on the scope and the amount of migration work. We can prepare a NetSuite proposal for comparison with your SAP options.
